The project is focussed on the Neolithic period which for the British Isles is generally dated as 4000BC to 2500BC. It is a period which abounds with unusual monuments made of stone, wood and/or earth.
The purpose of this section is two fold. First it is to clarify, for those familiar with the Neolithic period in the British Isles, which monuments we include in the terms we use. Second, it is to provide a very brief overview of the monuments for those who are less unfamiliar with the period.
The reader who is unfamiliar with the monuments may find references Historic England 2018 (a, b, c, & d) useful. These short guides are designed to be authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site. The documents are readily available on the internet and have suggestions for further reading about the monuments.
The Prehistoric Society also has short factsheets available on its website. These compliment the Historic England documents by providing more diagrams, introducing more sites and giving an insight into how the interpretation of the monuments has evolved. A link is provided in our list of references.
